Before beginning any type of welding job, it’s essential to understand the different types of welding techniques. Each technique can vary in results and there are a few other factors to consider before beginning such as:
- the results you want to achieve
- your experience
- type of metal being used
- environment
There are four standard welding techniques that we will be discussing in this article today, which include:
- TGI
- MIG
- Stick
- Arc
Read on to learn their differences and the uses for each technique.
Welding Technique #1: TGI
TGI is one of the most common welding techniques because it can be used on different material types. However, it is essential to note that the welds will be a lot thinner when using this welding technique. If you are more experienced in the field, this will be the best technique to use since it requires precision, it takes an experienced welder to complete.
Welding Technique #2: MIG
In the case of TGI welding, MIG welding can be used on various metals as well. It is also a great technique to use if your metals vary in thickness. Another benefit to using this process is that it produced high quality welds in a faster time frame. However, the equipment can be quite complex and also requires experience and practice to use properly.
Welding Technique #3: Stick
Shielded Metal Arc Welding, also known as Sick welding, uses an electric power source and a fixed-length electrode to weld together various metals. This type of welding technique is excellent for use in different environments, either outside or indoors, since gas and water hoses are not needed. The equipment is also relatively easy to use and inexpensive.
However, there are a few limitations to this welding technique. Oxygen contamination of the weld can become a problem, so it is crucial to not use reactive metals during this process, such as:
- titanium
- zirconium
- tantalum
- columbium
Welding Technique #4: Arc
Last but finally not least, we have Arc welding. This process uses an electric arc to heat metals to around 6500F, which melts the metals and allows them to join together. There are two main types of arc welding, which are consumable and non-consumable electrode methods.
Consumable methods involve using a shielding gas that protects the metals from contamination. These can include:
- flux cord arc welding
- shielded metal arc welding
- submerged arc welding
- electro-slag welding
- arc stud welding
Non-consumable methods involved the use of a non-consumable electrode which creates the arc along with shielding gas to prevent contamination, which can include:
- plasma arc welding
- tungsten inert gas welding
It’s always important to take into consideration the factors mentioned previously. These will help you determine the best type of welding technique that should be used on the job to give you the desired results.
